A slow computer is one of the most common tech complaints I hear from customers throughout Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Hollister, and Monterey. It starts gradually — pages take a little longer to load, programs take a few extra seconds to open — and before long, you're sitting there waiting minutes for your computer to do something that used to take seconds.

The good news: slow computers are almost always fixable without buying a new one. GS46 Tech comes directly to your home and gets to the bottom of it in a single visit.

Why Is My Computer Running Slow?

There's no single answer — slow computers have many possible causes, and diagnosing the right one is the key to fixing it properly. The most common culprits include:

Malware and viruses — Many infections are designed to run quietly in the background, consuming your computer's resources without showing obvious signs. If your computer slowed down suddenly, this is often why.

Too many startup programs — Every program that launches when your computer boots up takes a slice of your memory and processing power. Over time, these add up and the computer bogs down before you even open a browser.

A failing or full hard drive — If your hard drive is more than 85–90% full, performance drops significantly. If it's beginning to fail, you may notice freezes and crashes alongside the slowness.

Low RAM — If your computer doesn't have enough memory to handle the programs you're running, it starts using your hard drive as overflow. This is called "paging" and it's extremely slow.

Outdated or corrupted operating system — Windows and macOS accumulate junk over time. Corrupted system files, failed updates, and software conflicts can all cause sluggish behavior.

Overheating — Laptops especially slow themselves down intentionally when they get too hot, to prevent hardware damage. Dusty vents are usually the cause.

What We Do in a Slow Computer Visit

GS46 Tech runs a full diagnostic when we arrive, not just a surface-level cleanup:

  • Malware scan and removal if any threats are found
  • Startup program audit and cleanup
  • Disk space cleanup (temp files, browser cache, duplicate files)
  • RAM check — and upgrade recommendation if needed
  • Hard drive health test
  • OS updates and repair
  • Thermal check — cleaning vents and fans if overheating is a factor

Most slow computer visits take 1–2 hours and result in a noticeably faster machine before we leave.

Pricing

  • First hour: $175 (in-home, no travel fee)
  • Additional hours: $125/hr
  • Remote support: $100/hr for cases we can handle over screen share
